Southeastern Health Partners Generates More than $53M in Medicare Savings in 5 Years
Southeastern Health Partners has generated more than $53 million in Medicare savings within the past five years while playing an integral role in making health care more efficient.
SEHP provides patients with access to the best quality care, while also reducing healthcare costs by helping sick patients stay healthier and healthy patients remain well.
Founded in 2017, SEHP is a collaboration of 14 hospitals and more than 3,000 providers. The effort cut Medicare costs in South Carolina by more than $10 million on average based on the past five years, while also receiving an average quality score of 96%, according to a report from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
The organization has consistently been among the most efficient Accountable Care Organizations within its benchmark group, with per capita expenditures of $9,626 in 2021. Even among the most efficient Accountable Care Organizations in the Medicare Shared Savings Program – those with an annual benchmark of less than $10,000 in per capita expenditures – Southeastern Health Partners ranks near the top.
Southeastern Health Partners, in its first year of operation, became the largest Medicare Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organization in South Carolina – based on the total number of Medicare members attributed to providers in the program.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services rewards Southeastern Health Partners for improving quality of care and reducing costs, an honor that closely aligns with the organization’s primary mission.
Southeastern Health Partners ended 2021 with a savings rate of 2.17% on its Medicare population. The group’s success is particularly notable given its already low benchmark cost, meaning that Southeastern Health Partners providers already had lower costs per Medicare patient than most other providers.
Providers were able to reduce costs even more when Southeastern Health Partners formed, showing how financial goals can be met even while improving quality of health care for Medicare patients.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services keeps Medicare programs sustainable through the use of Accountable Care Organization and Medicare Shared Savings Program models that lower Medicare spending. These models help reduce unnecessary emergency room visits and prevent further hospitalizations.
